DAGMAR VAN WEEGHEL (1974)
I pursued a degree in Film and Photography in Amsterdam and graduated from the University of The Arts in 1998. After my education, I ventured to Africa where I worked on community film projects in countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Uganda, and South Africa for almost 14 years. This connection permeates through my life & work. My marriage to a Zimbabwean man and raising two children together after moving back to the Netherlands gave me a view into the struggles many African migrants face when they move to Europe. His experience opened my inquiry in how African people live outside of Africa, how images of African people have been constructed and deconstructed in Europe over time and ignited my line of inquiry regarding our shared human history.
In Esi Edugyan's book Out of the Sun (2022), I came across a passage that resonated with me. She beautifully describes the 'thread' I have been exploring. Edugyan mentions that she wanted to explore the lives of the people who have been out of sight throughout Europe's history. The people who were often marginalized, rarely appeared in the European art of the 18th and 19th centuries as living, breathing individuals, as regular civilians . Instead, they were used as a representation of cultural concerns, viewed through the lens of Christian morality and white society's standards. It was only in the twentieth century that black individuals were depicted as people living human lives' .
Being a white artist myself raises questions regarding the privilege given to someone who has grown up and lives within the context of slavery and colonialism. I have made it my mission to investigate this privilege and to understand the historical context out of which it developed. Through my work, I openly questions my own subjective perspective in relation to these issues.
I believe in the power of storytelling to bring hidden narratives to light and counterbalance worrying developments in society. I have faith in modern humanism, with its starting point of human dignity and compassion, irrespective of faith, origin, or skin color. Therefore, I use my work as a photographer to tell stories that challenge the status quo, bring light to the shadows of our shared human history, and contribute to a more compassionate, inclusive and just society.
